The Lake
Matoaka Amphitheater holds another story of “Glory,” deterioration and
rebirth. The beautiful lakeside setting was home to Paul Green’s outdoor
drama, “The Common Glory,” depicting Revolutionary-era Williamsburg, from
1947-1976. The amphitheater began to decay when the play ceased, and grass
grew
through the seats. Now, thanks to an anonymous donor (rumored to be a certain
actor or actress who once performed in the “Common Glory”), the amphitheatre
has been restored and even improved beyond its original condition, providing a
spectacular venue for outdoor drama and concerts.
