The main drag of the city is the Duke of Gloucester Street it is the area's principal east-west artery.  From the colonial Capitol building at the eastern end to the Wren building of the College of William and Mary at the west end the Duke is almost exactly a mile long. Contemporary Williamsburg along with Merchant Square anchors the block on the western end of Duke of Gloucester Street. The historic area extends 9/10s of a mile to the east and is about ½ mile wide. As the street is closed to vehicular traffic in the day it is most pedestrian friendly.
