Christmas in Yorktown is the perfect holiday to incorporate some of America’s oldest traditions with its newest. “A Colonial Christmas” explores 18th century traditions in our country’s first permanent settlement, offering guided tours that look at how Christmas may have been celebrated in the colony’s difficult early years. Listen to actual accounts of Christmas’s spent in military camps during the American Revolution and get a glimpse of holiday preparations on an 18th century Virginia farm!
On a more modern yuletide note, you may want to attend “Yorktown Celebrates Christmas: Yorktown Lighted Boat Parade.” Drink hot apple cider and listen to live entertainment as area boaters decorate their vessels and parade the York River, with the hopes of being Best of Show!
Holiday spirit pervades Historic Yorktown at the Yorktown Holiday Open House, where Main Street shops will be holding giveaways and discounts; restaurants will be tempting visitors with decadent appetizers; and artists will hold demonstrations. And of course…Santa will be there!
Fall is definitely the most beautiful time of year in Yorktown! The crisp weather motivates people to get active and there is much going on in the fall. Be sure to check out the Yorktown Wine Festival, one of the most premier in the state, and sample wines from respected wineries throughout Virginia!
Yorktown Day in October features a parade and a commemorative wreath-laying ceremony in historic Yorktown and Yorktown Battlefield. Check out Yorktown Victory Weekend in October, which marks the anniversary of America’s Revolutionary Wary victory at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. Learn about military life with artillery demonstrations.
Take an autumn stroll down Riverwalk Landing and pick up some fresh produce, meat, seafood, baked goods, art, flowers, and enjoy activities for the whole family at the Yorktown Market Days and Fall Festival!
If you love tall ships, attend Yorktown Maritime Weekend in late November and take a tour and enjoy live entertainment and fun for the whole family.
Why not learn something about the history of food while you are packing it in? On Thanksgiving the 3-day event: Foods & Feasts of Colonial Virginia at the Jamestown Settlement & Yorktown Victory Center, will teach you how food was gathered, preserved and prepared on land and at sea by the colonists and Powhatan Indians. You will learn about typical soldiers’ fare during the American Revolution and follow the route crops took from the field to the kitchen.
Yorktown Market Days run May through December on Riverwalk Landing, featuring seasonal fruits and vegetables, fresh seafood, eggs, poultry, beef and pork. Buy fresh breads, cheeses, baked goods, peanuts, cut flowers, organic and gluten free products, plants, coffee, jams, unique art, and enjoy live entertainment.
Show your American pride on the waterfront at historic Yorktown at the Independence Day Celebration! Featuring a bell-ringing celebration, patriotic entertainment, and a spectacular fireworks display on the York River.
From spring to fall, enjoy Riverwalk Landing’s concert series every Thursday, featuring a variety of music for all ages. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy the music and the waterfront breeze.
During the spring, the Yorktown beach also plays host to the Yorktown Kite Demo & Gathering, where you can go and see kite demonstrations and enjoy an afternoon of kite flying.
