Baby it’s…..still cold outside. Here in Williamsburg the winter can feel long, and while we can’t wait for spring to bring on outdoor concerts and farmer’s markets, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the great indoors! Whether it be cold, rainy or starting to snow, here are our top 5 ways to enjoy Williamsburg (all of them just a quick walk from the Inn!) when you have to stay inside…
Read a good book just a few doors down at Mermaid Books. This charming independent bookstore has stacks and stacks of rare books, used books, new books, vintage postcards and so so much more! This unique store is continually changing and switching things up, so there’s always something new to read.
See a show at the historic Kimball Theater, just across the square on Duke of Glouchester Street. This local theater houses plays and concerts by William & Mary and the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra, as well as some traveling one-night specials. It’s a great way to see some local culture!
Enjoy a cup of something warm and maybe a croissant or scone. Just next door to the Fife and Drum Inn is Aroma’s, a warm coffeehouse with a European flair. It’s a popular hang-out for both college students and lounging locals, and carries loose-leaf teas from the nearby Spice and Tea Exchange. Or check out Blackbird Bakery, just on the other side of the street! Their loaves, pastries and famous sticky buns are made fresh every morning, which go perfectly with a cup of Illy coffee.
Have a night out at Amber Ox Public House just across Boundary Street. This restaurant and brewery has frequent evening events and is always a great place to gather and enjoy delicious local food and drink. A little further down the street you’ll also find Triangle, a tapas bar with live music almost every night!
Have a little more time to spare? Just a few blocks over you can find the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum & DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum at Colonial Williamsburg. Two museums under one roof, and all of it is underground! Here you’ll find historic collections of local antiques, as well as folk art from then and now. It’s quite the experience, so make a day of it!
If you ever find yourself in the Williamsburg area and less-than-perfect weather, you now have a collection of fun and cozy experiences just waiting to be enjoyed! And don’t forget The Fife and Drum Inn is nestled right in the heart of town, so it’s the perfect place to stay!
